May 16, 2010, 3:28 PM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ronnie James Dio, the metal god who replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath and later piloted the bands Heaven & Hell and Dio, has died, according to his wife and manager.
Dio announced last fall he was suffering from stomach cancer. He was being treated at a Houston hospital, according to his Web site.
"My heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m," said a statement by Wendy Dio posted Sunday on the site and confirmed by publicist Maureen O'Connor.

"There he goes, one of Gods own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die"

Dang I remember us talking about him doing a gospel song
GO VOLS
I saw him at a small club in Louisville back in '98 and his voice was one of the greatest I've ever heard live. He will be missed.

all I've read about the man, the person off stage, is that he was the kindest, most friendly, true gentelman you ever met.

Funny thing about Dio is that he was lumped together with Ozzy, Sabbath, KISS, Iron Maiden etc. during the 80's and labeled as an "Evil Satanist"...lol..that's laughable. He will be missed... Many folks don't know a whole lot about his works besides what he did solo or with Sabbath. If this is the case, check out Rainbow's "Man on Silver Mountain"..ain't no better slab of metal anywhere any better.
...And if you ain't down with that, I got 2 words for ya....
It cracked me up when he was making fun of Gene Simmons saying he may have inventd the devil horns thing that his mom would do to word off the evil eye.
GO VOLS
I'm suprised Gene Simmons hasn't tried to trademark that gesture and slap a "KISS" logo on it.

Speaking of KISS, when I was a lil kid, I loved that band. And I still like 'em to an extent, but Gene's marketing of that band has become a turn off to a degree. I guess it's just me, but when a band's marketing overshadows the music for decades on end, it makes ya wonder why anyone would let that happen. KISS isn't the most talented band on the block, but there are many who are way worse. It's just the marketing of the band that I don't like I guess.
